Raki: Liquor produced from anise and licorice. It is the national drink of Turkey.
Rancio (RAHN-see-oh): Tasting term in Spain to describe a "nutty" flavor of brandy or Sherry.
Raspberry Jam: Jam made with raspberries normally containing fifty percent sugar and fifty percent fruit.
Raspberry liqueur: A raspberry-flavored cordial. Sometimes, it is also called creme de framboise.
Raspberry Sherbet: Mixture of raspberries, ice, and sugar blended and frozen.
Red Ale: Crisp, tart Belgian ale that may very well be one of the most distinctive styles in the entire world. It often has a burgundy-color to it.
Red Bull Energy Drink: Utility drink to be taken against mental or physical weariness or exhaustion, originating from Austria.
Red Pepper: Type of vegetable often used in Mexican cuisine.
Red Stripe Beer: Type of lager produced in England.
Reims (rAHnse): Cathedral city in northeastern France; it is the largest city in the Champagne region.
Reinheitsgebot (rhine-HYTES-geh-boat): German Purity Law of 1516 declaring that only hops, malt, water and yeast could be used for brewing beer.
Reposado Tequila: A tequila that often tastes mellow or rounded with hints of vanilla or spice. It is aged for about two months to one year in oak barrels.
Residual sugar: Unfermented, dissolved sugar that adds the taste of sweetness to a wine.
Retsina: A Greek table wine normally flavored with pine resin. The purpose of the pine resin was originally to help preserve the wine.
Rhein (rine): Well-known river that runs throughout Germany's major wine regions. Its name is used on many wines that were produced in vineyards located near or on the river.
Rheinhessen (rine-HESS-en): A large wine province in western Germany that produces wines that have the same name as the province.
Rheinpfalz (RINE-faultz): The old name for Germany's Pfalz wine region.
Rhône (rone): A major river in southeastern France that flows from Switzerland to the Mediterranean. Its name is used on many red, full-bodied wines that were produced from vineyards located near or on the river.
Rhône Blends: All medium- to full-bodied wines produced from white French grape varieties, such as Marsanne and Viognier or a combination of red French grape varieties, such as Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and others.
Ricard: Anise-based liquor produced in France.
Riesling (reece-ling): 1. Dry, white wine that is high in acid yet low in alcohol. 2. This grape is responsible for the greatest wines of Germany and Alsace and is also both popular and successful in many other regions. It is synonymous with White Riesling and Johannisberg Riesling.
Rioja (ree-OH-ha): The best and most well-known region for wine production in Spain. The region is located south of the Pyrenees mountains. It is famous for its smooth, medium-bodied red wines produced with a blend of grapes.
Rock and rye: An amber-colored American liqueur originally produced with its main ingredients being rye whiskey and rock candy.
Rolling Rock Beer: A lager producer in the United States.
Ronrico White Rum: Brand of white rum produced in the Caribbean.
Root Beer: A sweet, brown carbonated soda made with herbs. It is almost always non-alcoholic.
Rosé (ro-ZAY): French translation for pink table wine. This word is now commonly used throughout the world.
Rose's Lime Juice: Famous brand name for concentrated lime juice.
Rose Water: Rose flavored water that is normally produced using the oil of roses and petals.
Rosso: The Italian translation for "red" as in red wine.
Ruby Port: Fruity, young Port aged no more than three years in wood and bottled. During this time, it retains its bright red color.
Rum: Spirit produced from the fermented juices of sugar cane, sugar cane syrup, sugar cane molasses, molasses, or other sugar cane byproducts. Many light-bodied rums are distilled in areas like Puerto Rico and Hawaii. Most heavy-bodied rums are produced in Jamaica and Demerara.
Rum Cream Liqueur: Smooth, creamy, liqueur with a rum base.
Rumple Minze: Brand of peppermint schnapps. It is fifty percent alcohol by volume.
Rye: A form of whiskey traditionally produced in the United States and Canada. It is distilled from a mash containing no less than 51% rye grain. Often, producers of whiskey make rye in only limited quantities.
