Paarl: Wine region in South Africa, near Cape Town, that is mostly known for its reds.
Pacharan: Typical liquor from the north of Spain (Basque Country and Navarra) made from sloes infused in base alcohol.
Pale Ale: This English term is used to describe the premium end of the bitter category.
Palo Cortado: This strange drink from the Sherry family is described as tasting somewhere between a nutty amontillado and a full-bodied oloroso.
Papaya Syrup: Non-alcoholic, filtered papaya syrup.
Paprika: A mild powdered seasoning made from red peppers.
Parfait Amour: a purple liqueur that is flavored with citrus fruits, cloves, and other spices. Its translation means "Perfect Love".
Passion Fruit Juice: A beverage made with water and the juice of passion fruits.
Passion Fruit Liqueur: Sweet liqueur with a citrus base that is often produced in Australia.
Passion Fruit Nectar: Concentrate of passion fruit mixed with water and sugar.
Passion Fruit Syrup: Non-alcoholic, filtered passion fruit syrup.
Passoa: Coral-red liquor made by Cointreau (Spain) with a fresh scent of passion-fruit and citrus. It is twenty percent alcohol by volume.
Pastis: European anise-based liqueur that clouds when mixed with water. Because of this, it has acquired the name pastis. It is also called ouzo or ojen.
Pat Blue Ribbin Beer: Brand name of a type of beer.
Pat O'Brien's Hurricane Cocktail Mix: Brand name of a cocktail mix that allows you to easily make Hurricane Cocktails.
Peach Brandy: Grape brandy base flavored with peaches and peach kernels.
Peanut Butter: Type of spread that is very popular in Anglo-Saxon countries. It is made with roasted peanuts, icing sugar, molasses, vegetable oil shortening, and salt.
Peppermint Schnapps: Peppermint spirit, that is more fluid and usually with a higher alcohol content than the Creme de Menthe.
Pernod: An anise-based liquor made in France.
Perrier Water: Famous brand of naturally sparkling mineral water being exported from France.
Petit Verdot (peh-teet vher-doe): One of the family of fine red varietal wine grapes of Bordeaux, it is similar to Cabernet in flavor and character, but none of the finest châteaux use more than a small percentage of it in their blends.
Peychaud Bitters: Brand name of a bitters produced in the South of the United States.
Pfalz (faultz): The Southern German wine region known for its full-bodied Rieslings and other wines that approach the ripe style of Alsace in France.
Phylloxera (fil-LOX-er-ra): Microscopic aphid that lives on vine roots by sucking their juice. It destroyed most of the world's vineyards in the late 19th century, and returned as a menace in California during the 1980s. The aphid kills European vine varieties but native American vine roots are resistant; therefore the only way to defeat Phylloxera is to graft European wine varieties onto the resistant American vine roots.
Pickled Pepper: Pepper macerated in salt and vinegar, otherwise known as pickling.
Piedmont: A major wine-producing region of northwestern Italy. It is famous for quality Barolo and Barbaresco red wines and white Moscato d'Asti wines.
Pimm's: This liqueur has a base of London Gin and flavored with fruit extracts. It has originated from England.
Pina Colada Mix: Mix containing sugar, water, concentrate of pineapple juice, and other ingredients that enables someone to easily make a Pina Colada by just adding water and alcohol.
Pine Orange Banana Fruit Juice: Beverage made with water and the juice of pineapples, oranges, and bananas.
Pineapple Vodka: Type of Vodka flavored with pineapple.
Pineau de Charentes: a fortified red wine that is similar to port.
Pink Champagne: 1. A Champagne rose made in the Champagne region of France. 2. In the USA, any type of pink sparkling wine made by the "methode champenoise".
Pinotage (pee-no-tahj): Grape variety associated almost exclusively with South Africa that makes wines reminiscent of Syrah.
Pisco: Form of brandy made from Muscat wine produced in Latin America. The main producers of this type of brandy are Peru and Chile.
Pistachio Liqueur: Pistachio flavoured liqueur.
Plymouth Gin: Form of gin made with Italian juniper.
Poire William: Liqueur which is flavored with Williams pears.
Pommac Soda: A Dr. Pepper product of the 1960's. It was packaged in a clear bottle with white lettering and was light amber like apple juice in color. It had an apple-like flavor but could also be compared to ginger ale in taste. It may have obtained its name of the French translation of "pomme" which means apple.
Pommard (po-mard): A well-known vineyard commune in Burgundy's Côte de Beaune that produces Pinot Noir-based red wines.
Pop Rocks: A type of candy that pops and jumps around when you put it in your mouth.
Popsicles: Frozen, sweet fluids in a set shape or form. Coloring is normally added, and they often come in fruit flavors.
Port: Fortified red wine normally produced in Portugal. There are many different varieties of this wine.
Porter: This was originally produced before the fine art of roasting malt was perfected. It is normally dark in color, medium in alcohol, and roasty in flavor.
Pousse-cafe: After-dinner drink made with liqueurs of varying weights and colors. The liqueurs must be delicately poured into the glass so several separate layers of liquid are the result.
Powdered Milk: A powder that can become an artifical form of milk by adding water.
Powdered Sugar: Sugar in powder form.
Powerade: Energy drink produced and sold by the Coca-Cola Company. It can be found in different colors and flavors, such as "Blue: Berry flavour", "Green: Melon and pineapple", and "Red: Fruit punch".
Praline liqueur: Cordial flavored to taste similar to buttery pecan pralines.
Press: Process of squeezing the last remaining drops of juice or wine from the grape skins during or after fermentation. Also, the machine used for pressing.
Primitivo: A Southern Italian grape variety that is believed to be the same as California's Zinfandel.
Prosecco: An Italian sparkling wine.
Proof: The scale for measuring and expressing the alcohol content of spirits. Proof equals twice the alcohol content. For example, an 80-proof vodka contains 40 percent alcohol.
Provence: The wine-growing region of southeastern France that is located on the Mediterranean. It is mostly known for its rosé wines.
Prune Juice: Beverage made with water and the juice of prunes.
Prunella Brandy: Plum-flavoured brandy.
Punsch/Swedish Punch: Rum-based drink to which other forms of alcohol--including wine--are added together with other spices like cinnamon. It is sweetened and then cask-aged.
Punt: This is the concave indentation in the bottom of certain wine bottles--especially those containing sparkling wine.
Pure Peppermint Extract: Concentrated essence of peppermint.
Pusser's Rum: Type of rum produced in England. It has forty percent alcohol by volume.
