Glossary of terms

  • Galliano: Sweet Italian liqueur that is based on up to eighty herbs, roots, berries, and flowers from the Alpine slopes to the north of Italy. Flavorings include anise, licorice, and vanilla.

  • Gin: Alcoholic drink distilled from malted grain and flavoured with juniper berries. It was invented by a Dutch chemist in the 17th century as a remedy. Later, it was brought to England and developed there as a favorite liquor for the working class.

  • Ginger: Root-stock of a tropical plant used in cookery, medicine or sugared and eaten as a sweet.

  • Ginger Beer: Drink made by the fermentation of root ginger, sugar, water and yeast with a very low alcohol content.

  • Ginger Snap: Biscuit flavored with ginger.

  • Ginger Wine: Wine with a grape base to which ginger, spices, herbs and fruits have been added.

  • Glayva: Scotch-based liqueur that is flavored with heather honey, orange peel, and various herbs.

  • Godiva Liqueur: A chocolate liqueur available in white or dark chocolate. It has seventeen percent alcohol.

  • Gold Puerto Rican Rum: Gold rum originating from Puerto Rico.

  • Goldwasser: Sweet colorless liqueur that is based on the drink kummel and to which gold specks are added.

  • Grand Cru: French wine classification for great vineyards.

  • Grand Marnier: Sweet Cognac-based liqueur that is flavored with oranges.

  • Grappa: An Italian brandy made from distilling grape skins that remain after wine production.

  • Grenadine: A thick, red syrup used in cocktails, traditionally made from pomegranate juice.

  • Gueze (gooze): Beer term for a blend of young and old lambics.

  • Guinness Extra Stout: Very famous stout coming from Ireland.
